Get Started
Your best bet to getting started with Dungeons and Dragons is actually a multiple-choice question. How do you prefer to learn about new things?
- Talking to people: Find yourself a D&D nerd and talk to them. Try your local game shop or online game community.
- Read books: Get yourself an official D&D Players Handbook! AKA, the “PHB”.
- Watching videos that explain things: There are 1,000,001 videos up on YouTube. A fun and very brief introduction can be found in JoCat’s “A Crap Guide to D&D” videos (NSFW for language).
- Learning by example: Well, you’re in luck! Watch / listen to any or all of the shows below, in the D&D Actual Play section!
D&D Actual Play
I have passionate opinions about D&D actual play shows. Mostly, about which ones you should watch / listen to.
In short:

There are dozens of others, of course. Some I’m familiar with – and like, but am not a superfan! – include:
- Critical Role (see also the Netflix series The Legend of Vox Machina)
- Girls Who Don’t DnD
- And…?
